In about two months since the beginning of the semester, we have nearly doubled our budget from $15,000 to $25,000. Presentations to Dean Michael Shinagel of the Harvard Extension School and Allan Powell of the Harvard Cooperative Society (The Coop) have led both to increase their commitments to HESA. Dean Shinagel has generously agreed to add an extra $5000 to the HESA budget of $15,000 for the first time in HESA history, an occurrence that is still reverberating throughout Brattle Street due its historic significance. Allan Powell has also generously agreed to fund HESA a full $5000 this year as well. We are eternally grateful to the vision and generosity of Dean Shinagel and Allan Powell and the confidence they have shown and continue to show in their support for our student association.

This success will enable HESA to do more for students than ever, and marks an historic turning point in HESA’s relationships with its two principal financial backers. Both gentlemen expressed pride in President Bisasor’s plan to strengthen HESA’s organizational capabilities and to elevate the standing of the Association as a first-class student organization.

There was also a new collaborative relationship that emerged from these two meetings, where both gentlemen encouraged HESA to assist them with matters important to their respective organizations. Among other initiatives, Dean Shinagel invited HESA’s help in promoting the annual Lowell Lecture, which commemorates Harvard President A. Lawrence Lowell, who founded the Harvard Extension School a century ago. Noting the Lowell family’s long involvement in evening education, Dean Shinagel pointed out that this occasion deserved to be a celebration of the School’s mission and ideals. He invited HESA’s input in the selection of this year’s Lowell Lecturer and encouraged President Bisasor to formulate a plan to increase student interest in the event. For more information on past Lowell lectures, go to http://www.dce.harvard.edu/pubs/lowell/ and http://www.extension.harvard.edu/2009-10/news/lowellonline.jsp.

Meanwhile, Alan Powell of The Coop noted that too few Extension students avail themselves of the bargain of Coop membership, and seem unaware of the many inspiring charitable causes that Coop membership supports. The Coop pays its members a rebate of more than 7% of what they spend on books, clothing, and supplies. In addition, it supports a diverse array of organizations on campus and in Cambridge. Concerned that Extension students were missing out on the Coop’s rebates, President Bisasor agreed to formulate a plan to encourage Coop membership as part of a new partnership and collaboration with the COOP. Meanwhile, The Coop has begun to staff an information table at HESA social events. Dean Shinagel is also a vice chair of the board of directors of the Harvard Coop.

Though we are near our goal of more than doubling our budget for the year, we still need your support and so fundraising, both for HESA and for its affiliated societies and clubs, will thus continue. The Paypal link at the top right of HESA’s webpage is an easy way to give to HESA. Members interested in assisting with HESA fundraising should email hesaboard@gmail.com.

Dear Harvard University Extension School Students

Thank you for making the HESA October Social & Activities Fair (on Friday, October 30, 2009) a great success with about 170 students in attendance. Students who attended report they had a fantastic time and the clubs report that their memberships have significantly been impacted as a result of the innovative trade show/exhibition phase of the event. Club leaders were also given, for the first time, a platform to make presentations to the student body as a whole in a town-hall style-format during the second phase of the program. And during the socializing phase as well as throughout the entire program, attendees moved another step closer to developing more meaningful relationships via this community-enriching experience. If you would like to participate in our feedback survey, please go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=EZAdlVvPJcvn6Fzfrlgsyw_3d_3d

We are also happy to announce the following:

1) We have nearly doubled our budget from $15,000 to $25,000 in only two months since the beginning of the semester. My presentations to Dean Michael Shinagel of the Harvard Extension School and Allan Powell of the Harvard Cooperative Society (The Coop) have led both to increase their commitments to HESA. To read more, see http://hesa.dce.harvard.edu/?p=1129 .

2) We implemented the first ever distance-equipped HESA board meeting as part of HESA’s new “distance student liaison” initiative. International students (reaching as far as Slovenia, Europe) as well as domestic students in other states(including those from DC and NY) participated in our regular Board meeting on November 13th, marking a new day for distance students in terms of their being integrated into student life at Harvard through HESA. Our next board meeting will be on December 11th, and so if you would like to participate as a distance student, please contact us at president@hesa.dce.harvard.edu.

3) The International Relations Conference, hosted by HEIRC, has drawn praise from diplomats, journalists and scholars from around the world. To view the video, pictures, or media reports, visit http://www.uspakconference.com/post_event.html

Stay tuned for more updates including pictures and videos of other events.

If you have not been able to attend our events in the past, we hope that you can join us in the future as we have a number of exciting upcoming events for the month of November and December. For more information on these and other events, please take a look at our events calendar.

And for more information on October’s activities and achievements, see the Message From The President: October under President’s Blog.

As always, we appreciate your support!

Andre Bisasor

NOTICE
October 19, 2009

Boston and Cambridge food pantries and homeless and women’s shelters will receive much-needed assistance this fall through the charitable efforts of members of the Harvard Extension Service and Leadership Society (a subgroup of the Harvard Extension Student Association). The student-organized group has launched an ambitious food drive with a goal to collect at least 1,000 nonperishable items by December 4, 2009.

Prompted by President Drew Faust’s campus-wide call to service, and led by management degree candidate Diane Hopson, the drive was officially kicked-off Friday, October 16, World Food Day. Collection bins are placed at various locations around campus, including:

Sever and Emerson Halls

79 JFK Street in the KSG-Belfer Center—first floor

Memorial Church—first floor front entrance lobby

Graduate School of Education—first floor Gutman Library

HDS Andover Hall—first floor lobby

Joining with the efforts of the Leadership Society are additional student groups on campus, such as the campus-wide Christian Fellowship, the Kennedy School Student Government, and the Harvard Toastmasters.

In order to ensure collection of a variety of non-perishable items, different goods are requested each month:

October: vegetables, juices, dry cereal, dried or canned fruit

November: canned lean meats (such as tuna fish, salmon, chicken), canned or dry beans, bean soup, chili, pasta, nuts, peas, beef stew, and peanut butter

December: canned, dried, or evaporated milk; dried or canned fruit; oatmeal; whole grain rice; all types of pasta; high fiber cereals such as Cheerios or Raisin Bran

From Harvard President Drew Faust:

Dear Students,

Today marks the beginning of Public Service Week at Harvard, with numerous events across the University that you will find listed on our dedicated website http://service.harvard.edu/. As I mention in my op-ed in today’s Crimson http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=529584, our purpose is to reinforce Harvard’s commitment to serve the common good, and to recognize the many contributions made by our students, faculty, and staff every day–through teaching, research, hands-on service, and work on policy solutions. You’ll see from the week’s program, also published in today’s Crimson, that there is a wide range of issues and projects in which members of the Harvard community are engaged, as well as many opportunities for service that you may wish to pursue.

One example of the latter, to which we have committed the entire University, is the Greater Boston Food Bank. Beginning with two sessions in November and continuing from January through the end of the academic year, Harvard students, faculty, and staff will volunteer at the Food Bank on Friday mornings. Participation in this volunteer program requires working a Friday morning shift from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Harvard will provide shuttle bus service from campus locations in Cambridge, Longwood, and Allston, along with lunch for all volunteers. We encourage student groups to assemble a volunteer team to support this effort, and groups interested in staffing the shifts beginning in January should reply to this message or call Harvard Public Affairs and Communications at 5-4955.

I wish all of you the best in this midterm season, and hope to see you at some of the Public Service Week events.

Sincerely,
Drew Faust
